55: Traps

Nino is "good at fooling people". The pranks he's pulled on variety shows have been surprisingly skillfully executed, and the magic he was hooked on is pro level. His words and actions are occasionally tricky, and he's perplexing to the people around him. "Though I'm not very conscious of 'tricking' anyone (laugh). Like for magic, I got into it because I was interested in the techniques. And I don't think I'm especially good at pranks."

Then what about in terms of acting? In the expressions Nino shows us in movies and dramas, it seems like he's hiding "something", and he stirs up the audience's imagination.

"When I'm acting, too, I'm not consciously fooling anyone, but I'm happy when people start to imagine things. What I do in terms of acting is simple. One thing is I differentiate in my speech between lines that should be heard and lines that don't need to be heard. It's the same for expressions you can and can't understand when you see them. Even if it's written in the script, if it's a line I don't think is necessary for the audience to hear, I'll say it at a volume that's hard to catch. Even in your everyday life, it's not like you hear every single word someone says to you, and it's not like every single emotion is written on their face. Sometimes words and emotions that are hard to understand turn into a quick jab, and they hit you later. Starting with the sad expression of someone looking at the person they love, you start to wonder what that person is saying. There are sometimes feelings that don't reach the other person even if you say them out loud, and that's sad and wonderful. I try to recreate that while acting, too."

It's precisely because he doesn't say too much or show too much that deep emotions and relationships exist. That stance carries naturally into love and work and even the private relationships he has with people.

"I don't say things that don't need to be said to people I'm close to. For example, I don't tell the members of Arashi every little change that occurs in my private life. It's not like we constantly meet up with each other in private either. It's information they don't need in their everyday lives. And I'd feel bad if they tried to be considerate of me."

Because he didn't play as a child, he doesn't feel the urge to play now.

Then what about "things he doesn't want to say"? If he cheats on his girlfriend while they're in a relationship, would he tell her the truth? Or would he hide it?

"While I think it's the kind of thing that you shouldn't go out of your way to say, it'd be really unfair of me to hide my bad deed (laugh). So in that case, wouldn't it be best in the long run to own up to your mistake and try to make up for it? Though personally, I don't do anything that I know I shouldn't be doing to begin with. Doing it is a pain (laugh). And I've always had little desire to play. I'm often told, 'You've been working since you were a child so you couldn't go out and play, you poor thing.' But because I've never played around before and I don't know how fun it is, I never get that desire to. And I've basically never gone to clubs, and I don't ever feel like I want to. Gaming is more fun than that. Since that's how I've lived my life till now (laugh). Just the other day, I had the chance to go drinking with a certain creator, and that was more fun than 'playing' would have been. His stoic approach to creating things, his zealous behind-the-scenes stories... listening to that was so interesting I couldn't deal with it. Like, for games, too, more than the tricks meant to fool you, I like the secret tricks and setups that are meant to be enjoyed. Older games had a lot of those kinds of things."

Nino says that in movies and dramas, he himself has fun setting traps like secret tricks and foreshadowing. During Platinum Data, aside from the standing positions and where people were looking that he's mentioned before, "we actually did even more than that."

"A finger casually pointed in a certain direction, or adlibbed lines. But the ones we improvised were mostly cut. I think we went overboard (laugh). For example, there's a scene where Ryu and Professor Mizukami, played by (Suzuki) Honami-san, are painting together. We were actually endlessly adlibbing with each other the entire time that was being filmed. While Ryu had Mizukami-sensei paint for him, they made it all the way to a conversation about what they dreamed about the night before, and we accidentally got to the core of the theme of the film. After it was filmed, even we thought it was an amazing scene with great foreshadowing. But we aimed a little too closely for the edge, and it went out (laugh). It isn't in the film, but I think the fact that we planted those kinds of things will turn into 'something'."

As soon as we think that someone this tricky would be full of secrets, he happily reveals the foundation of his traps. That side of him is also interesting.

"For games, it'd be good if you tried it and cleared it on your own, but for movies and dramas, the setups tend to be one-way traffic from our end. So after hearing about the things we set, it'd be great if the viewers went back and had even more fun watching. It's not that I want to fool people. I want them to enjoy themselves, so I set some traps along the way (laugh)."

Born on June 17, 1983 in Tokyo. Their new song "Endless Game" goes on sale May 29. The first regular variety show that he's MCing, Nino-san (NTV, late night on Wednesdays) is currently airing to wild praise. Nino says he's been keeping house more and more recently. "Even when I'm at home and I see a cute girl or sexy woman on TV, sort of thinking to myself 'she's cute' is plenty. See, my friends I drink with are all over 50. I'm surrounded by people in their 50s and older (laugh)."
